Student Testimonials

KB: “Devon was truly one of the better teachers I had at UNC so far… Overall, it was always a very comfortable and enjoyable environment in class with Devon. She taught our class exactly the way I think lecture style teaching should be done.”

Teaching Assistant:

I have experience working on a diversity of courses as a teaching assistant and instructor ranging from large introductory courses serving a broad student base to smaller, advanced specialized courses serving departmental majors and graduate students. Topically, my courses have included introductory climate and earth sciences courses, technical methods courses on GIS and remote sensing, as well as socio-political courses on the social and political aspects of food systems.

As an instructor, my approach is part traditional lecture, part discussion to promote an active learning environment. My goal in the classroom is to introduce concepts and encourage students to consider applications in their areas of interest. I particularly enjoy working with students to develop term research projects and helping them think about new methods or approaches to studying the topics that interest them most.

DEI & Accessibility:

In my subfields––remote sensing, land sciences, and physical/quantitative geography more broadly––women are significantly underrepresented. As a woman in this field of research, one area of DEI that I’m particularly passionate about is making fieldwork, a fundamental aspect of geoscience research, more inclusive for all genders, races, sexual orientations, socioeconomic backgrounds, and abilities as this is a major barrier for diversity in geography.

My pedagogy is deeply informed by having a learning disability, dyslexia, which affects my reading and writing. As a teacher, I prioritize student accommodations and crafting assessments which maximize student’s ability to demonstrate their knowledge effectively.

CC: “I really enjoyed Devon's style of teaching! She made sure the class understood each new concept and framed problems in different ways to aid her teaching … She was always willing to help and was easy to contact when I needed help with something.”

AP: “Devon Maloney was an amazing instructor. She was very active as a course instructor … Her assignments were always very clear and had clear goals behind them. Overall, Devon was an awesome instructor and I would take another class with her if possible.”

ZK: “Devon excellently explained the fundamentals of GIS analysis, using interactive exercises along with traditional lecturing to break down complex concepts... Thanks to Devon's class, I have developed a deep interest in remote sensing and imaging; I am excited to take more analysis-driven classes and to explore the intersection of geospatial data and social theory.”
